Read this instruction sheet carefully and completely!  It is two pages long.

(This Course Paper document is incorporated into the class Syllabus, as if more fully stated therein.)

As a part of this course, each student is required to prepare and submit a course paper which will count as approximately thirty percent (30%) of your course grade.  This should be viewed as an opportunity for you to find a topic of interest to you, which is related to Healthcare Law, conduct some independent research into the topic, select and defend a position relative to your topic and provide a sound foundation in order to earn your points for this paper.

Now for the specifics:

You must select a topic that is related to our course subject matter.  It should not be a topic upon which you have written before and submitted for credit unless discussed and approved with this professor.  This must be your original work and not something you download or cut and paste from one of the term-paper online sites.  Yes, this old goat knows about those.  Using generative AI or similar technology to write your paper is not acceptable!  This paper must reflect your personal writing.  Please don’t disrespect yourself and follow this improper course of action.  It will not be well received by this professor.  I want to be somewhat liberal in what I approve for you to write about, as I want it to be of interest to you, but I am very, very conservative regarding your work actually being your own (human) work.  If you use a form of AI to conduct research, then you must give proper attribution and explanation of its use.  “E’nuff” said about this.

You should select a topic directly related to healthcare law or ethics in health services.  I will create a portal in Blackboard for you to submit your paper.   My goal is to ensure your topic deals with health-related law or ethical circumstances arising in the healthcare context. It may also include an ethical perspective.

I really want this to be something of interest to you, but it must be directly related to our course subject matter.  What might I suggest?  Well consider a law or case that has been written about and analyzed that impacts upon healthcare law and how managers in the health field must operate because of such.  Be careful to select something for which you can find sufficient research materials, as I have some requirements on those.  Although I want you to express an opinion and defend the same regarding your topic, the paper should not be wholly unsupported opinion, full of conjecture or surmise.  Nor should this be a book report simply restating what an article contains.   Please, I don’t wish to read about the need to legalize particular things or activities, unless it directly impacts upon trends in healthcare law and the services impacted.  One good thing about healthcare law, there are plenty of laws, regulations, policies and developing issues for which a good paper is waiting to be written.

FUNDAMENTALS:

This course paper will be a minimum of eight (8) full substantive pages in length and no longer than ten (10) pages, excluding any cover page, contents, index, bibliography, charts, appendices or other non-substantive writing pages.  Include a cover page with your name upon it (not part of the 8-10 pages).   Although you may use charts or artwork to explain your writing, it may not count for more than one page of the paper when combined in my opinion.  If you fill up your paper with art, charts and graphs, it will not reflect well in your grade points to meet the minimum page requirement.    I want at least eight (8) good pages of your typewritten work, double-spaced, with margins no greater than one (1) inch on the sides and no more than one and one-half (1.5) inches at the top and bottom of each page.    You should number each page at the bottom of the page, centered.  Your type font size should be twelve (12) points, no greater or smaller. Please do not use some unusual font.  Use “times new roman” or some similar font for me to read with ease.

Your paper must have a bibliography providing at a minimum four (4) different sources of research for your paper.  This does not include your textbook.  You may use your textbook, but it does not count as one of your four sources.  If you find sources within the textbook, you may use them, but your textbook is not one of your four sources.  You may include more than four, but you must have at least four different sources of research information properly cited.  You must give proper credit/attribution to any source cited within your paper.  Now, if you simply cut and paste what someone else has said in the body of your paper and expect a superior grade, you are mistaken.  You must give proper credit, but what I want from every student as well, is your reasoned thoughts and position on the topic.  You will learn that when a judge writes a decision in a case, he or she must provide the rationale, supporting information, and defend the position taken in the ruling.  I want each of you to do the same for your analysis of your topic.  The “cut and paste” game will not get you the grade you want.  Express your ideas using correct English, proper grammar and support them with relevant and noteworthy sources.

Plagiarism is a form of Academic Dishonesty as contemplated in the course syllabus.  Any form of plagiarism will result in a Zero (0) on this paper.   This will negatively impact your course grade.

Grammar, spelling and punctuation will count in determining your grade!!!  You are in graduate school, and I will count points off of your grade for poor grammar, spelling and punctuation.  You may use APA style for citing your sources.  If you are citing a law or legal case, then follow the Blue Book form of citation for the legal material mentioned.  I want you to express an idea from your research effectively and communicate clearly in your paper.  Write as if you are submitting a paper to your boss on the position your healthcare company should follow, and why it is the best course to pursue.  If you fail to do a good job, well, your boss will find someone who can express clear, concise and rational thoughts on matters of importance to the company.  If you don’t know how to use the spell check feature, well, “E’nuff “said.  Be effective and particular.  You must learn how to communicate your ideas without using slang and shortcut type of language.  Such says to the reader that you are either too lazy to write out the complete word, or you do not respect their time enough to do so.  Consider your audience.

Your papers are due Sunday, March 31, 2024 and no late papers will be accepted after March 31.  You have plenty of time to get this done and it represents a significant part of your course grade.  I will create a portal in Blackboard for you to submit your paper and send out an announcement when it is ready.

Don’t wait until the last minute and run the risk of issues submitting your paper.  If your paper is not submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 31, you will not earn any points for this portion of your course grade.  No Late Work will be accepted.

Thank you! I look forward to reading what you submit, as I always learn something!
